Auckland University Professor and Head of the Medical and Rehabilitation Robotics Research Group, Professor Shane Xie presented to an open audience of PN Hospital staff. His presentation suggested robots will be the future of medicine, used for both medical surgery and physical recovery.
According to Professor Xie, robots can assist with the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and those who suffer strokes. Over 15 million people each year suffer from strokes alone, with 5 million permanently disabled. Specialist software programmed to measure data can allow the robots to assess rehabilitation. One of the robots developed by Professor Xie’s team is already under clinical trial in both Auckland and China and will hopefully become commercially available in the next few years.
